Kelly Sanders Brown has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated animal cruelty more than a year after her 3-year-old daughter, Fiona, and the family dog, Penelope, were found dead inside a parked vehicle in Maine.

Brown, 41, entered the pleas in Penobscot County Superior Court. Under the proposed agreement, she would face 20 to 25 years in prison for manslaughter, while a five-year animal-cruelty sentence would run at the same time. A judge must still decide whether to accept the agreement.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner determined that Fiona’s probable cause of death was related to heat exposure after spending hours in the vehicle, according to the criminal complaint cited by People.

Brown’s defense has said mental-health issues affected her judgment at the time. Those statements are part of the defense position and do not change the guilty plea she has now entered.

A Judge Will Decide the Sentence

Judge Bruce Mallonee reserved final approval of the plea agreement until sentencing. Brown is expected to return to court later this year.
