A 17-year-old Massachusetts teenager has been charged with killing his mother and younger brother inside their Acton home after prosecutors said he had previously made online searches about killing his family.

Arjun Aravind was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his brother, Siddharth Aravind, 14. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf during an Aug. 13 arraignment, and he was ordered held without bail.

The killings left one member of the immediate family - the victims’ husband and father - confronting the deaths of his wife and younger son while his older son stands accused.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan called the case an “unspeakable tragedy.”

A Well-Being Check Led Police to the Home

The father contacted police on Aug. 11 after being unable to reach his family at their Martha Lane residence, CBS Boston reported.

He had last seen Venkatesan before leaving for work around 7 a.m. Siddharth was seen at a recreation center that morning and returned home around noon, according to prosecutors. A tutor later arrived for an appointment but received no answer at the door.

Police entered the home that evening.

Siddharth was found on the first floor, while Venkatesan was found in the basement. Authorities said both had suffered obvious trauma, though the official causes of death had not yet been determined at the time of the initial reporting.

Prosecutors Pointed to Earlier Internet Searches

Ryan said investigators had learned that Aravind had recently displayed behavior that concerned his family.

According to the district attorney, that included using the internet and ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasy stories involving the killing of family members.

Court documents also showed that his father had become concerned about his internet activity and behavior and had begun hiding knives in the home, CBS Boston reported.

Authorities have not publicly announced a motive.

The existence of online searches is part of the prosecution’s account, but it does not by itself establish why the killings occurred.

Teen Was Found in His Mother’s Car

Investigators said Aravind left the home in his mother’s Honda Accord.

The vehicle was located early the next morning in a parking lot in Wayland after officers responded to a business alarm. Police found Aravind inside and arrested him without incident.

At his arraignment, prosecutor Susan Wiseman said items recovered from the vehicle corresponded to the murder scene.

Aravind’s defense attorney, Debra DeWitt, told reporters that her client did not realize his mother and brother were dead when he left the house and described him as being in shock.

She also said the father wanted help for his son and requested a psychiatric evaluation.

A Family and Community Face a Long Case

Aravind is due back in court for a probable-cause hearing on Sept. 11.

He has pleaded not guilty and has not been convicted.

The prosecution will now have to establish in court what happened inside the family’s home and whether the evidence supports the murder charges.

For Acton, the case has brought a rare and deeply personal tragedy into an otherwise quiet residential neighborhood.

Neighbors told CBS Boston they were shaken by the police activity and by learning that a mother and teenage son had died nearby.
