Neighbors Help Woman Escape Honolulu Kidnapping Attempt

A 77-year-old woman tried to intervene when a man grabbed a younger woman in a Honolulu condominium garage. She told Hawaii News Now that he pushed her away and struck her in the face, but other witnesses helped the 24-year-old escape. Police arrested a suspect hours later.

The confrontation unfolded around midday on October 26 near the Kainalu condominium on Coconut Avenue, in the Diamond Head area. Surveillance footage captured part of the incident.

A Confrontation Inside the Garage

Local reporting described a truck outside the building and a man entering the garage, where he encountered the two women. Police said he pursued the younger woman and lifted her during the confrontation.

The older resident moved to help. According to her account, the man shoved her away and hit her as she attempted to intervene. Other people then stepped in, helping the younger woman break free.

The witness account and surveillance footage provide a partial sequence of the encounter: the man entered the residential garage, confronted the women and grabbed the younger resident before people nearby interrupted him. The woman escaped before police made their arrest.

Police Arrest a Suspect

Police detained a man hours after the confrontation. Local reporting described charges connected to the attempted kidnapping, but the accused has not been convicted.

Investigators had not publicly established a motive or a relationship between the suspect and the younger woman in the reporting reviewed. Those questions remain separate from the actions described by witnesses and captured on video.

The older resident was herself hurt while trying to help. Her intervention, followed by assistance from others nearby, was central to the account of how the younger woman got away.
