Christa Pike Describes Constant Pain One Month After Failed Execution
By Dana Whitfield. Nov 4, 2026
Christa Pike says she remains in constant pain and struggles to speak a month after surviving Tennessee’s attempt to execute her by lethal injection. In her first public statement since the procedure, she described waking alone in a hospital after entering the execution chamber expecting to die.
“I had not contemplated life beyond that night,” Pike said in the statement dictated to her attorneys and released October 30.
Pike, 50, is on death row for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, a 19-year-old classmate. The September 30 execution attempt ended with Pike being taken to a hospital, prompting a state review, evidence-preservation orders and renewed legal requests concerning her sentence and confinement.
Her statement describes her own experience of the aftermath. It does not establish why the lethal-injection procedure failed, a question that remains under review.
Hospitalization and Continuing Treatment
Pike received two doses of a lethal-injection drug during the attempt, according to CBS News. A media witness reported hearing her snoring about an hour after the procedure began. She was then transported by ambulance for emergency care.
Her attorneys said she developed pneumonia and a blood clot, had difficulty swallowing and initially could not move her arms or hands after regaining consciousness. Those descriptions came from her legal team, not a public release of her complete medical records.
She later began walking and returned to prison for further treatment on October 10, CBS reported. Her new statement said the recovery had not ended her suffering.
“My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak,” she said. “And the pain isn’t just physical.”
Pike also said she continued to think about Slemmer’s family and the pain and loss they had endured, according to Associated Press reporting carried by ITV News. She expressed gratitude for the support she had received while describing uncertainty about her future.
Questions About the Injection and Prison Conditions
Court filings have raised the possibility that the drug did not properly enter Pike’s bloodstream. Her attorneys contend that it pooled in tissue in her arms, leaving burns and blisters, according to AP reporting. That proposed explanation remains distinct from the state’s pending review.
Newly released court material also raised questions about preparation for IV access. In a 2025 deposition, Warden Kenneth Nelson said the execution team no longer practiced inserting IV lines during training at the prison commissioner’s direction, according to AP reporting carried by ITV. The practice appeared in an earlier Tennessee protocol but not the new one.
Tennessee Department of Correction spokesperson Dorinda Carter declined to comment on the filing because of pending litigation, the AP reported. The deposition addresses training practices; it does not by itself establish the cause of the failed procedure.
Gov. Bill Lee paused executions through the end of 2026 and ordered an outside examination of what happened. A judge also ordered preservation of evidence related to the procedure after a request from Pike’s lawyers.
Separately, her attorneys have sought enforcement of an earlier agreement governing aspects of her confinement. They allege she has been largely isolated in a prison medical unit since leaving the hospital. That dispute concerns her present treatment, rather than the evidence underlying her murder conviction.
Her lawyers have also asked Lee to commute her sentence to life imprisonment. Attorney Steve Ferrell told CBS that, at a minimum, the death penalty should be taken off the table for her.
Lee indicated that he expected the existing sentence to remain unless the courts determined otherwise. Pike’s survival has not itself vacated the sentence.
“I don’t know why I survived that night. I don’t know what comes next,” Pike said in the statement. “For now, I am trying to heal, one day at a time.”
