A Veteran Officer Is Dead, and a Search Is Underway

A 31-year Worcester police veteran was found dead at his Massachusetts home Tuesday, and authorities are searching for Karen Solomon, a woman who shared the property with him and had previously been identified as his wife in court records.

The officer was identified by the local police union as Kurt Solomon. Authorities said Karen Solomon, 58, had been at the house and was wanted for questioning as investigators examined what officials described as a domestic matter.

Police said she could be armed.

Local, state and federal agencies joined the search, turning the death of a longtime officer into a major law-enforcement operation across Worcester.

Colleagues Remember 31 Years of Service

Kurt Solomon had spent more than three decades with the Worcester Police Department.

Thomas Duffy, president of the local police union, described the loss as deeply personal for officers who had spent years working alongside him. He called Solomon reliable, dedicated and committed to the city he served.

For a department, 31 years of service represents more than a resume.

It means generations of colleagues, thousands of shifts and a career tied closely to the community. Duffy said Solomon’s death was being felt throughout the department.

Authorities Have Been Careful About the Relationship

Police publicly identified Karen Solomon but did not initially detail her relationship with Kurt Solomon.

The Associated Press reported that city records showed the Solomons owned the home together and that a previous bankruptcy filing identified Karen as Kurt’s wife. Officials said privacy rules involving domestic investigations limited what they could discuss publicly.

That distinction is important because the investigation remains active.

Authorities have said they want to question Karen Solomon about what happened. She had not, in the AP reporting available Wednesday, been convicted or publicly charged with killing Kurt Solomon.

Police released surveillance footage as part of the search and distributed flyers in the area.

Her Public Work Adds a Striking Contrast

Karen Solomon is also known publicly for work focused on the well-being of police officers and other first responders.

She co-founded First H.E.L.P., an organization that works on first-responder mental-health issues and supports families affected by suicide, according to the organization and AP.

That connection has added an unusual public dimension to an already painful case involving a veteran police officer.

First H.E.L.P. expressed condolences to the officer’s family, colleagues and the Worcester law-enforcement community.

The organization also said the circumstances were an active law-enforcement matter and declined to comment further on the investigation.

Police Continue Searching for Answers

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said investigators wanted to speak with Karen Solomon because she had been at the house.

Officials have not publicly laid out the complete circumstances of Kurt Solomon’s death or announced a motive.

For now, two realities sit beside each other.

One is an urgent search involving several law-enforcement agencies. The other is the grief inside a police department that lost a colleague after 31 years of service.

Until Karen Solomon is located and investigators release more evidence, major questions about what happened inside the Worcester home remain unresolved.
